Why do bad things happen?

11 HIM’s of the Rock Region gathered today at Wall Street as marathon and half marathon training continues for many in the Region.  The weather was nice & breezy and a little less humid than the last several weeks so the plan was simple & set.  As the PAX began to gather and the appointed hour drew near YHC urged everyone to get in their stretching as we were headed out promptly at 0500.  So that’s what we did –

The Thang –

We headed down India Hook toward Cherry Road and YHC explained to the PAX that today was Samurai’s birthday (57) and we were going to meet the men from Eagle’s Nest at the flag in front of Tillman, recite the Pledge of Allegiance and sign Happy Birthday to Samurai.  All of the PAX did a great job and those in front regularly came back to pick up the six and grab some extra distance.  Once we arrived to Tillman, we joined the men who were about to get a Samurai beatdown and recited the Pledge and sang to Samurai – and then we were off.  We headed back down Oakland Ave. towards downtown and once we reached the overpass near ROCO, we turned around and headed back down Cherry Road.  After we crossed Cherry Road, we turned left on Ebenezer and enjoyed the flat surfaces.  Several of the PAX were really getting after it – Pescador and Walker were in a full on sprint, but both remembered to circle back and pick up the six.  Once we reached Herlong, near Food Lion, we headed back to the AO and got in just in time.  Altogether, we got in around 6+ miles and had some great conversations & fellowship along the way.

YHC closed out the morning by mentioning that Fairness was the word of the month and a question I was recently thinking about was “why do bad things happen to good people?”  Sometimes when they do, we think “That’s not fair” – but…..Grace isn’t fair either.  We don’t deserve God’s Grace, yet we receive it.  Then YHC shared the following verse

Romans 5: 3-5

Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, endurance produces character, character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit

So….getting back to “Why bad things happen?” – this requires perspective that knowing and being comforted by the fact that God doesn’t give us any more that we can handle, he always has us exactly where he wants us, and if we will let him, he will allow us to use our experiences to help others.  I encouraged the PAX to remember that if have been through a difficult period, we are being equipped to help somebody else out down the road

We closed out the mornings with a few announcements along with prayer requests and praises.  We closed out the morning in prayer.  It’s always an honor to lead – thanks Big Fundamental for the opportunity to do so
